The Power of Gestalt: Why the Present Moment Matters

Of all the approaches I trained in, Gestalt therapy is the one closest to my heart — my Masters thesis at Universiti Sains Malaysia was devoted to it. So let me try to explain, in plain language, what it is and why it helps.

The whole picture

The German word Gestalt roughly means “a whole pattern.” The founding insight is that we experience life in wholes, not fragments — a melody, not separate notes. You may know the famous vase illusion: two faces or one vase, depending on where your attention rests. The picture never changes; your way of seeing does. Much of therapy is exactly that — not changing the facts of your life, but becoming aware of how you organise them, and what you have stopped noticing.

Here and now, not just then and why

Many people expect therapy to be archaeology — digging through childhood for explanations. Gestalt therapy takes a different route: it pays attention to what is happening now, in the room. What did you feel just then, when your voice went quiet? What happens in your body when you mention your father? The past matters, but it shows up in the present — and the present is the only place change can actually happen.

What this looks like in a session

  • Noticing feelings as they arise, rather than only reporting on the week
  • Paying attention to the body — tension, breath, posture — as honest information
  • Finishing “unfinished business”: saying, in a safe space, what was never said
  • Owning our experience: moving from “one feels hurt” to “I feel hurt”

It is gentle work, but surprisingly powerful. Awareness, Gestalt therapists like to say, is itself curative: we cannot change what we cannot yet see.

If this way of working resonates with you, message me on WhatsApp — I would be glad to tell you more in person.
