Understanding Therapy: What to Expect From Your First Session

Almost everyone is nervous before a first counselling session. Some of my clients rewrite their opening sentence in their head for days; others nearly cancel three times. If that is you, you are in good company — and it might help to know exactly what will happen.
Before we meet
With me it begins with a WhatsApp message. We arrange a 30-minute pre-counselling consultation (RM50), in person in Kuala Lumpur or online. There is no form to fill, no referral needed, and nothing to prepare.
What the first session is really for
- For you to be heard. You share whatever feels safe to share — in whatever order it comes out. Tears, silences and “I do not know where to start” are all perfectly normal openings
- For your questions. How does this work? How many sessions? Is it confidential? Ask everything
- For honesty about fit. I explain how I work and what I think could help. If I believe someone else — a psychiatrist, a specialist — would serve you better, I will say so
- For you to decide. The session ends with the choice entirely in your hands. No pressure, no follow-up sales call
What you will not find
No judgment about how long you waited to come. No lying on a couch unless you want to. No forced revisiting of anything you are not ready to touch. You set the pace; my job is to make the pace safe.
One honest expectation
A first session will not solve everything — anyone who promises that is not being truthful. What it can do is make the weight feel shared, and give you a clear, unpressured sense of what support could look like. That is a meaningful beginning.
If something in this article speaks to you, you are welcome to message me on WhatsApp. A first conversation costs RM50 for 30 minutes, and there is never any obligation to continue.
