Unlocking Mental Wellness: How Online Counselling Works
“But what is it actually like?” That is the question I hear most about online counselling — usually from someone who wants to try it but cannot picture it. Having counselled online since 2021, let me walk you through it honestly.
The mechanics, minus the mystery
We agree a time by WhatsApp. Shortly before the session you find a private spot — bedroom, office after hours, even a parked car works surprisingly well. You join the video call; I am in my own quiet room. And then we simply talk, exactly as we would across two armchairs. Fifty minutes later you are already home, kettle within reach.
Honest advantages
- No travel, no traffic, no parking — sessions fit inside real Malaysian schedules
- Access from anywhere: East Malaysia, small towns, or overseas
- Familiar surroundings help many people open up sooner
- Continuity: travel, moving house, or a sick child no longer break the rhythm of support
Honest limitations
Screens flatten some of the small signals I would catch in a room, so I work a little harder to check in. Privacy at home is a real constraint for some people — if the walls are thin, headphones and timing matter. And for acute crises or safety concerns, online is not the right container; in those situations I will help you find in-person and medical support first.
Making your first online session comfortable
- Test your camera and connection five minutes early
- Use headphones; put a note on the door if needed
- Keep water and tissues within reach — sessions can go deep
- Give yourself ten quiet minutes afterwards before re-entering the day
